1. Time, time, time.

  • When it comes to applying for university, having sufficient time to adequately prepare is of utmost importance. Of course there are rare occasions where students whocomplete their application at the eleventh hour (the last minute) still make it in time for the beginning of the school year – but we are pretty sure that if you asked any one of those students, they would tell you that they would have preferred to have had more time to prepare.
  • The application process is no rocket science and is pretty straightforward, yet the amount of work that goes into it can make it seem complex and confusing – which why even for us at ELI 360 who have been helping students make it to university for the past 20 over years still advice for students to give themselves and their families enough time to prepare.

2. More opportunities.

  • Most universities have unique scholarship opportunities as well as honors programs that have early deadlines. Students who miss these deadlines will not be eligible for these scholarships. They will also not be able to get into these honors programs, which is especially unfortunate for students who have excellent grades and are well-rounded in their studies. The benefits of being involved in the honors program at a university include additional scholarship opportunities, recognition of academic excellence at graduation and most importantly – a more challenging but enriching academic curriculum.

  • Most student and families don’t realize that correspondences between the school and the family often require quite a bit of time. Even though we live in a day and age where communication seems to occur at the speed of light, it is also not completely impossible for things to be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • Students need to understand that the schools they are applying for are far geographically and sometimes, important documents may take days, even weeks, to arrive at the intended recipients through mail.
  • Moreover, when a student applies later, schools are usually swamped with loads of applications and it may take considerably more time for schools to process each application. Applying early gives both the student and the school enough time to make sure that everything is done in a proper and orderly manner.

4. Visa Application.

The Crest of the US Embassy: Remember, Visa Applications can be tricky!

  • Students wishing to study in the United States, unless they have US Citizenship, are all required to pay a visit to their local US Embassy in order to apply for a Student Visa. Student Visas (called I20s) are typically issued by the school, which are then subject to approval by the US Embassy. The universities that we work with cannot issue an I20 until they have heard from the student that they have finalized their decision to attend that specific university. Applying early and making a decision early can help make this Visa Application process smoother, on top of giving the student ample time to re-apply if they do happen to be rejected the first time.

5. Better Decision Making.

  • By applying early, students give themselves and their families ample time to carefully consider all their options. Whether it is a decision about which university to go to or what kind of dorm room to live, it is important to realize that going to university is a huge commitment, especially when it is overseas. There are many decisions to be made about this huge next step in the young person’s life and the more time the young person has to think through his decision with his parents and mentors, the better!

6. Reduced Stress Levels.

  • As with most of life’s major tasks, applying to university often comes with a certain amount of stress. Maintaining a healthy stress level is extremely important at this stage and giving one’s self more time can only help.
  • Students who are leaving their families to go study overseas need the time before college to be memorable, since it will be quite some time before the student gets to see his or her family again. As such, planning early will help facilitate lower levels of stress which in turn reduces the tension and opportunities for conflict between family members during this crucial period of preparation.

New Student Orientation: Don't underestimate how important orientation can be to your new life at University. ELI 360 recommends all international students to take part in their universities orientation.

7. Make it to Orientation.

  • Most universities have orientation for the new students a few days before the beginning of the semester. The orientation program is often designed to help these new students get acclimatized to the campus and university life. New student orientation is also a great time for international students to meet and make new friends. For these reasons, orientation is often recommended by the universities for the new students. It is especially important for new international students to take part in orientation since they have to adjust, not just to a new environment on campus, but also a new culture and way of life.
