A native of Midland, Texas, Ms. Simmons will be officially recognized as LCU’s first ever octogenarian graduate. According to Simmons, she graduated from high school on a Friday and started working for the Midland Reporter Telegram the following Monday, where she worked for the next 59 years.  In the fall of 1988 she began taking one course a semester at Midland College.  In 2002 she enrolled in LCU’s Organizational Management degree completion program.  On May 7th, 2011, Simmons received her Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management after taking college level classes for over 13 years. When asked about her future plans following graduation, Simmons said that she is contemplating taking some graduate classes in the fall in early childhood learning or marketing because in her words, “I’m not out of money yet.

Simmons should be commended for her hard-work and dedication, as well as her firm belief in life-long learning. Her story has been an inspiration for her much younger classmates at LCU. It has been said that “age is just a number.” In the case of Betty Simmons, she has proven that this saying holds especially true in the area of learning.
