The ESL Program serves as a bridge between high school and university coursework for foreign students who grew up in non-English speaking backgrounds. The program blends the more traditional classroom-oriented styles of training with progressive and lifestyle-relevant methods of mastering English. By focusing on the four aspects of mastering a language: 1) reading, 2) writing, 3) speaking and 4) listening and understanding, the program seeks to help these students come to a better knowledge, not just of the language, but also about the culture and lifestyle of West Texas in addition to the wider culture of America.

While enrolled in the program, the students will be learning English five days a week in the classroom setting here at Hardin-Simmons University. Part of the promise of this program is the small class sizes which are already a distinctive characteristic of HSU. This is particularly important in the case of these ESL students as they will be guaranteed individualized attention from their teachers in order to help maximize learning.

The students have the unique opportunity of being integrated into the wider student body by living in the dorms and interacting with the rest of campus just like any other undergraduate students.  Furthermore, the students have full access to the academic, recreational and technological facilities at the Hardin-Simmons campus.

Recently, the five students were invited to a reception by the HSU Administration held in honor of them. The tea-time event was held on Tuesday, September 28 and had a majority of the key administrators and university staff members present for a formal meet and greet session. The students were welcomed by Dr. Shane Davidson, HSU’s Vice President of Enrollment and Marketing Management, who expressed his excitement about the new program.

That same week, the students were featured by the local news channel KRBC – a subsidiary of NBC news – on their evening news. The television report showed the students in class and describes their experiences thus far at Hardin-Simmons University. Please click here to view the news report on the KRBC News website.

ELI 360 would like to thank the administration, faculty and staff of Hardin-Simmons University for all their hard work in making this project a reality. We would also like to thank KRBC news for highlighting the ESL Program and its five students. Finally, we would like to acknowledge the courage and bravery displayed by these students in leaving their home country in pursuit of education. We wish these students and Hardin-Simmons University all the best for the rest of this academic year and we look forward to seeing continual growth in this remarkable program.
